Tasting Notes:

2023 Seven Directions “Tractor & Vines” Rose
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley,
100% Pinot Noir | Dry | 13.0% ABV
93pts Carl’s Wine Club

Another year, another masterful delivery from the “Rose Master.” Daniel Bontorin has learned the potential and capabilities of the unique “one and a quarter acre” vineyard in Summerland, BC known as “Tractor & Vines.” The very warm 2023 vintage turned out a very low yield, which all amounted to a different expression of Pinot Noir than the previous vintage. Bolder and richer, this year’s Tractor & Vines Rose delivers aromas of orange blossom, peach, strawberry cream and – uniquely – some pencil shaving-like mineral notes. On the palate, the soft flavours of strawberry, honey melon, cantaloupe and ripe golden apple are balanced by fresh and vibrant acidity and light tannins. The salty characteristic that we have come to expect from that small vineyard is also present in every sip again this time around. A short time in neutral barrels helped soften the edges of this very well-defined wine. The finish is charismatic and appealing with notes of lemon peel intermingling with sensations of dusty road and minerality. Once again, one of the very TOP roses from Canada…if not the best! Only 150 cases made. (CWC, Feb 29, 2024).

Viticulture & Winemaking:

Sourced from a single vineyard, the grapes for this Pinot Noir rosé were sustainably farmed on the Tractor & Vines Vineyard located in Summerland B.C. This tiny 1.1-acre parcel sits at lake level and faces perfectly East-West. The soil for these 15-year-old vines is dry farmed in rich organic matter, silty clay loam and Fluvioglacial deposits. Rooted on Riparia Gloire and grafted with close 667. Lower yield this season yielded excellent depth of flavour, creaminess and focus with 4.12 short tons hand harvested on October 18th, 2022, with 22.5 brix. This season saw one of the coldest springs in many years, with late budbreak and uneven vine growth. Heat domes in the summer, but mother nature gave us arguably the best October in recent memory to ripen the abundant crops. The grapes were crushed, cold soaked on the skins for a mere 2 hours then gently pressed. Fermentation took place in 75% stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and aroma, as well as 25% in neutral French oak barrels for added creaminess and texture.

Tasting Notes:

The colour of this wine has never been as “Provence” as this year: very pale with a salmon hue. The Pinot Noir juice had only two hours of skin contact, which helped preserve the freshness of the fruits. On the nose, the aromas are shy and discrete, announcing a wine with elegance and precision. Mandarin, sweet lemon, lemon drop and orange blossom comes up in a distinctive fashion. On the palate, you’ll find incredible finesse, precision, purity and intensity.  Flavours of mountain strawberry, lemon confit, citrus peel, blood orange, yellow apple, Asian pear and white flowers all line up in a masterful sequence ending in a lush creamy finish.
